Born and raised in Harlem, NY, Tschabalala Self (b.1990) demonstrates a unique style through collage portraits that explore the bodies of black women to illustrate their lives and culture. The exaggerated body expressions in the images, which are created using compositions of various materials and techniques such as paint, acrylic, fur, silk and sewing not only transform the perception of blackness and womanhood but also reflect the artist’s personal feelings and desires. In particular, most of her images start with drawings expressed in concise and simple lines, which are then sewed together to convey a facial and emotional state. Various materials are added to form multi-dimensional body parts, which allow the artist to create her own sensuous and distorted figuration. In this simple, yet complicated collage process, the artist symbolically shows that an individual’s body itself is a true mixture of diverse figures and emotions accumulated through life experiences. Through own actions and emotions amplified without any shame, Self leads us to rethink how to understand race, gender, and our biological characteristics in the contemporary society.
